Kamal Haasan is definitely the King of Experimentation in Indian Cinema. Thoonga Vanam (Sleepless Forest) is adapted from successful French Film (Sleepless Night). Film was completed within 38 days with wonderful planning & execution from the team. Movie is directed by Kamal’s assistant Rajesh M. Selva. Kamal never fails to satisfy his fans with wonderful plots. Let us see whether Ulaganayagan satisfies the Common Man in this review
Story – Prakash Raj kidnaps Kamal’s son with the demand that he will be returned if his cocaine bag is returned. But, unfortunately, when Kamal agrees to accept the deal, the cocaine bag vanishes. What happens next forms the crux of the story.
Kamal Haasan – He is one of the very few actors who takes Indian Cinema to next level. Thoongavanam
doesn’t follow any pattern of Tamil Cinema. There are absolutely no songs in the movie or any commercial compromises. Indeed, it follows hollywood’s movie pattern. Hence, Kamal has taken the huge risk of satisfying only ‘A’ Center (Multiplex audience) & has gone ahead with it. He is a brilliant actor & nowadays he chooses the appropriate scripts, which is tailor-made for him to show his acting potential in each & every scene.
Trisha – She is very lucky to get this role. It is completely different from usual Indian movie heroines roles. Her fight scene with Kamal Haasan has come out really well.
Prakash Raj –A perfect Villain is much needed in leading hero movies to engage the audience. His acting in few scenes was as good as Kamal.
Kishore, Asha Sarath, Yugi Sethu, Jagan, Madhu Shalini, Uma Riyaz, Sampath Raj, etc have done just ice to their roles. Boy who acted as Kamal’s son impresses with wonderful acting & expressions. Chaams scenes were quite good.
Music Director Ghibran – It is fourth successive Kamal’s movie. He is definitely lucky & should be blessed to work along with the legend. He is also a good experimenter and has given his best till date for Ulaganayagan. He has rocked with BGM in this movie too.
Cinematographer Sanu Varghese – Whole movie happens within a pub without proper lighting, but he has captured it beautifully. Action scenes have come out superbly.
Editor Shan Mohammed – Story starts from the first scene itself & he has edited quite well, as the first half was completely engaging.
Director Rajesh M. Selva – Kudos to him for not compromising anything on the original script “Sleepless Nights’ for one of the best actors in Indian Cinema. He could have easily kept few more emotional scenes for the legend to perform, but he didn’t. First half was too engaging as there are lots of twists. But, the second half becomes too predictable & acts as the spoilsport.
Overall, Thoongavanam is an unique crime thriller in Kollywood Cinema with wonderful performances from Kamal Haasan & Prakash Raj, which will satisfy the target audience.
Rating of this movie by Common Man – 2.75 / 5
Rating of this movie for Kamal Movie Lovers, Multiplex Audience & who wants to see unique movies in Tamil Cinema – 3.25 / 5
